Reporters disclose personal, financial, or political interests that could reasonably affect their reporting. Disclosed conflicts may result in story reassignment, recusal, or transparent footnote.
#Our policy
- Reporters file an annual conflict-of-interest declaration with the Editor-in-Chief.
- Updates required within 7 days of a new conflict arising.
- Active stock holdings in covered companies → recusal from coverage.
- Political party membership → no political coverage.
- Family relationships with subjects → disclosed in any reporting that touches the subject.
#What we disclose to readers
- "This reporter holds shares in [X]" footnote where the company is the subject.
- "The reporter's relative is employed at [Y]" footnote where Y is featured.
- "This publication's parent company [Z] is referenced; our editorial team operated independently" footnote.
#How we enforce
Failure to declare a material conflict is grounds for editorial action up to and including dismissal. Complaints about undisclosed conflicts can be sent to the Reader's Editor.
